Rome — 2024
Five days in Rome, from 11 to 15 March 2024 — flying Transavia out of Rotterdam The Hague Airport, from the Colosseum and the Roman Forum to the Capitoline Museums, Castel Sant'Angelo and the Trevi Fountain. Log below, day by day.
Departure to Rome
We depart from Rotterdam The Hague Airport on Transavia flight HV6035 to Rome Fiumicino. After landing in the early evening, we travel on by train and metro into the centre, where we check in at the Hearth Hotel. We round off the evening with our first Italian dinner at Archi, an atmospheric restaurant with a vaulted ceiling of old brick.
Haircut and the Capitoline Museums
A full day starts with a fresh haircut at a classic Roman barber and an espresso on the corner. Afterwards we walk via Piazza del Campidoglio into the Capitoline Museums, where we spend hours among famous bronze and marble statues and beautifully painted halls. We close the afternoon and evening with an aperitivo overlooking the Monument to Vittorio Emanuele II, followed by pizza at a little place around the corner.
Castel Sant'Angelo and the Trevi Fountain
A quieter day with the classics of the historic centre: first Castel Sant'Angelo on the banks of the Tiber, then a walk past Piazza Navona with its fountains and domes. Around midday we take a break on a terrace, before walking through busy shopping streets to the Trevi Fountain. We end the evening with dinner and a sweet finish.
The Colosseum and the Trevi Fountain at Sunset
After a cappuccino at a cosy pasticceria, together with a friend, we head to the Colosseum for a long morning full of Roman history: from the upper galleries overlooking the arena to the dim passages below and the Roman Forum in the distance. In the afternoon we take a break with a lively aperitivo surrounded by Campari bottles, before walking past the Trevi Fountain again in the late afternoon. The day ends at Archi, our trusted restaurant from the first evening.
Last Morning, Then Home
Before it gets light we walk for the last time through the quiet streets by our hotel, with the fortress walls of Castel Sant'Angelo still in the morning mist. After killing some time at Fiumicino, we board Transavia flight HV6036 for the flight home, with a clear blue sky and one last glimpse of the snow-capped Alpine peaks. A lovely ending to five days in Rome.
